What are some tips/exercises that can help me stay healthy as a software engineer ?

Here is a short 10 ‘must do’ list to get you started TODAY:
  1. Drink lots of water. Minimum 2 liters a day. 1 glass of water 30 min before your every meal and 30 min after every meal.
  2. Choose stairs vs. elevators.
  3. Move every hour. Don’t sit for longer than 1 hour. Do yourself a short break. Sitting is new smoking.
  4. Walk at least 5km a day. Park your car far away from the office, choose public transport, find the route with most walking, ride a bicycle.
  5. Have at least 15 min walking after your heaviest meal.
  6. Become an early bird. Best time to get up is 5 am - you will have more productive time for work and/or exercises. Go to bed by midnight and have 6–7 hours of sleep (10:00 PM if you want to wake up at 5 am).
  7. The longevity formula - raise your Heart Rate (HR) at least 3 times a day up to 70% of your HRmax, where 220 – age = HRmax.
  8. Jumping Jacks your age. You can do it before/at/after your work.
  9. Breathe 5 times just before Eating
  10. Upgrade your nutrition (For more details check my answer on Quora on healthy food habits)
    1. Cut sugar.
    2. Take fruits (dry or fresh) between meals.
    3. NO Soft Drinks: High Fructose Corn Syrup Kills!
    4. Choose Tea over coffee
    5. Choose red wine vs. beer or strong alcohol.
    6. Consume shellfish & eggs (increase good cholesterol - HDL)
    7. Oily Fish, Hemp/Flax seed oils
    8. Black Chocolate (>70% of cocoa)
    9. Only eat when you are hungry.
    10. Drink you food and chew your liquid (slow down!)
    11. Prefer soups & salads for late dinners.
    12. Limit red meat consumption to 1 per week.
